Your child's smile is an essential part of their comfort and psychological wellness. Children with misaligned teeth are often teased on the playground and at school, and they may become withdrawn and have low self-esteem. That is why it’s crucial to make sure that you take your little one to the dentist regularly for check-ups.

At East Village Dental, we provide high-quality orthodontic care for children. We offer braces, brackets, and retainers to help correct dental misalignment. Our Calgary dental centers have a friendly and caring environment where your child can get the dental care they need.

Signs That Your Child Needs Braces

Here are signs that your child may require braces.

  • Prolonged Thumb Sucking

If your young one sucks on their thumb for a long time, there’s a high chance that their teeth will protrude outwards. Most children suck on their thumbs between the ages of 2 and 4 years, but if they keep sucking their thumbs after the permanent teeth come in, they will need braces to correct misaligned teeth.

  • Crooked Teeth

Everyone wishes that they had the set of teeth they see on magazine covers, but that's not how mother nature works. Many people need different dental devices to align their teeth properly. If your child has crooked teeth, you may be wondering whether the issue is big enough to require orthodontic help.

Crooked teeth might cause embarrassment and low self-esteem, make chewing difficult, and can become painful. Although you are not trying to make your child look like a movie star, taking them to the dentist will save you from dealing with more significant dental problems later.

  • Abnormal Bites

An abnormal bite refers to the misalignment depending on how the teeth in the upper and lower jaw fit together. There are four types of abnormal bites; an overbite, crossbite, underbite and, open bite. Overbites occur when the upper teeth protrude and overlap the lower teeth while underbites arise when the lower teeth protrude.

Crossbites are a result of irregularly positioned teeth bringing them closer to the tongue or cheek, instead of their normal position. A crossbite can lead to a child’s jaw not close properly, making it hard to speak or eat.

Children with an open bite have an alignment problem where their upper and lower teeth do not touch. When abnormal bites are left untreated, they cause problems with chewing, fractured teeth, and lisps.

  • Late or Early Loss of Baby Teeth

If your little one lost their baby teeth too early or too late, they may need braces. Children lose baby teeth when they are six years old. But it can happen as early as four years old or as late as eight years old, in which case they might develop alignment issues and require braces.
